You’ve probably heard this advice before: “Listen to yourself, listen to your needs, and you’ll be on the easy path to well-being.” If you have become aware that you do not know how to listen to yourself, you will feel a distressing effect as a result. The meaning of these messages can be misinterpreted. Our upbringing and past learning can cause us to miss the essential meaning of the messages from our inner voice. For example, a woman at work may have learned to conclude and say to herself:
“I have to stay on my toes at work. I must always be ready to do what is asked of me even if it gives me stress. It’s normal to be stressed, because we don’t achieve anything without effort”.
This woman interprets her illness as normal. His beliefs acquired in his education will contribute to feeding his discomfort by adopting a posture of compromise between his feelings (inner voice). The interpretation is modeled on the educational learning done through the lessons received. I choose to listen to the injunctions and constraints posed by the outside and only listen to the “must” and “I must force myself to…”.
